The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
